This primary contest involved a total of $436,046 in contributions and $486,935 in expenditures. On the basis of these figures the expenditure by all three candidates for each vote cast was $.46 in the first primary and $.18 in the runoff election.

It is obvious that this political contest attracted much money. The campaign chests of the three candidates in the first primary were roughly equal. The person who reported spending the most money did not receive the largest number of votes; however, the candidate who spent the smallest amount received the fewest votes, but the amount of money involved is not related to the number of votes received. In the second primary the available resources were not even. In fact, one candidate received almost twice as much as the other and his expenditure more than doubled that of his losing opponent. Apparently the losing candidate had difficulty in attracting contributions to his cause. Although there are differences in the amounts received and spent, one common feature also appears in the figures: all candidates report deficits. In no case does a candidate report receiving as much as he spent. The largest deficit is reported by the candidate who won.

Costs of the general election contest as reported indicate that it was not as expensive as the primary. Figures used for the general election are those reported by the candidates and/or the state party. Not all the money spent by the state organization was used for the gubernatorial campaign. Expenses were also incurred in contests for other executive offices, legislative offices, and judicial offices. For example, the state party headquarters frequently donates money to the party congressional nominees, particularly when their chances of winning are great. Finances reported are as follows:
